SEO is an abbreviation for Search Engine Optimization, and why is SEO important? The most important reason is probably because it brings you traffic, a well search engine optimized page will usually rank much better in search engines than a page which is not optimized. The better you rank in search engines, the more traffic you will get from them. And you do want organic search engine traffic, it’s the best traffic you can get and it’s free!
There are two things you want SEO to do for you, apart from ranking high in search engines to get traffic, you also want to rank high on the right terms so that you get targeted traffic. Targeted visitors are visitors that are really interested in what your website has to offer. To accomplish this you need to both do on site optimization to make sure the search engine bots know what your website is about, as well as trying to get people to link to your website using relevant terms.
When people link to you it will help your search engine ranking, a link to you is like a vote that your site is worth a visit, and the search engines picks up on this. The search engines also notice what the text on the link to you is, so if your site is about vacation rentals in Spain, it will help you a lot that links pointing to your website use the title vacation rentals in Spain. Lets take Adobe as an example, because millions of websites link to their Adobe PDF reader website using the phrase “click here to get Adobe PDF reader”, they rank as #1 in Google for this term. Just google the term “click here” and check yourself.
On site SEO has to do with titles of your articles, headings, sitemaps and how your website is organized overall. It is important that the search engines figure out what your website is about and what terms to rank the various articles for.
