Why do we dream?

Dream research offers many answers to the question why do we dream, but there is no single definite answer. Some researchers believe that dreaming is essential to our mental, emotional and physical well being while others believe dreaming serves no real purpose at all. The most commonly accepted theory however is that dreaming is a way for our brain to reorganize itself while we sleep. We are bombarded with new impressions every day, both consciously and unconsciously and the brain needs a certain amount of time to reorganize this information. This happens while we are sleeping. During our dream phase researchers believe the brain files away key information and discard meaningless data.
Other well known dream theories are that we dream to solve problems and to cope with trauma. Harry Fiss, one of the earliest pioneers in dream research, claimed that our dreams can help us register subtle hints that we didn’t notice during the day. Cause of this going to bed and sleeping on it can help us provide a solution to a problem. When it comes to trauma, many people dream about traumatic experiences they have had, and this may help them cope with the trauma.
