Why are people so stupid?

Why are people so stupid is a question you hear a lot, so why not make an article about this question here? This is usually a question people ask others out of frustration when they’ve had a bad day or met someone they didn’t get along with. Who is stupid usually depends on the eye of the beholder, and it is often used to describe someone with a different opinion than yours, especially when it is on a matter that is very important to you.
Why are people so stupid is a pretty stupid question actually, and it doesn’t really have any good answer. Some people score low on IQ tests and you can argue that these people are not intelligent, but the word stupid is usually not used for these people. Calling people of low intelligence stupid is not considered decent behaviour, and the word stupid keeps being used to describe people you disagree with instead. This is a misuse of the word obviously, but that’s usually what people mean when they ask this question.
There are many different definition of the word stupid, the most common ones are “slow to learn and understand”, “pointless or worthless” and “tending to make poor decisions or careless mistakes”. The last definition is sometimes the one people think about when they ask the question “why are people so stupid?”. Then the question is usually asked when people hear or read about someone getting in trouble making a poor decision. The question is usually not asked out of frustration in this situation, but more in a surprised way or to make fun of the people in the story.

Stupidity has nothing to do with IQ, intellect, or perception. Stupidity is the inability, sometimes deliberate, of a perfectly cognizant individual to grasp a meaning, no matter how often it is pointed out. If I tell someone who asks me how a radiator works that I don’t know a thing about radiators, the thing that qualifies that person as stupid is that he/she will ask me the same thing again, in slightly different wording, and when the answer is the same, will ask yet again. They don’t retain the answer because they don’t want to retain it. They want me to suddenly tell them how to fix the radiator because they feel I should know. Maybe it’s because people feel that everyone else knows more than they do about everything. Who knows why they can’t get the message? We can’t understand each other’s mentality completely. And, as much as we hate it, we are all that way at one time or another.
