Why Cuban cigars are illegal for US citizens is cause of the Cuban Trade Embargo. The Cuban Trade Embargo by the United States was partially imposed on Cuba in October 1960. In was strengthened to a near total embargo in February 1962 after Cuba expropriated the properties of United States citizens and corporations. The embargo is a financial, economic and commercial embargo, and this embargo is the reason why Cuban cigars are illegal in the United States.
It is illegal for US residents to buy Cuban cigars regardless of where they are in the world. The Cuban cigars are available just across the border to Canada or Mexico, however, and many Americans try to smuggle these cigars home with them. Smuggled Cuban cigars sell at high prices in the USA, but studies have shown that more than 95% of the cigars sold as Cuban in the USA are counterfeit. Cuban cigar rollers or torcedores as they are called, are claimed by cigar experts to be the most skilled cigar rollers in the world, and the Cuban cigar is considered one of the world’s best cigars.
