Social networking websites are a great way to keep in touch with family, friends and pretty much anybody who shares the same interests you do, but are they reliable?

They may seem like a business which will last forever, but in reality they keep losing popularity daily. Take for example MySpace, they used to be huge, every band and almost every internet user had an account, promoting the things they like, sharing their activity, their feelings and their oppinions on music, videos or photos; now however, the only persons who still use MySpace on a daily basis are the bands, because they usually started promoting their music there and if they have no website, people will remember the MySpace band link.

You may see daily a friend which asks you if you have Facebook, after he discovered it; this is how it works with social networking sites, every friend asks another friend to signup, thus building a big community.

Social networking sites were something like a new T.V., as companies could advertise, media companies could share information and so forth, but how can you be sure that the site you are using now won’t be gone in 10 years let’s say?

Take for example a band, who doesn’t own a website, but has a good reputation on a social networking site. This way, as long as the social networking site is up, they promote their music, they are invited to gigs, they keep in touch with their fans; as soon as the site is down, the band will be forgotten, as they can’t keep their fans update, only if they know them personally.

Linux comes in 2 different versions, the desktop distributions (which are for simple home users) or server distributions (which are made for hosting companies, game servers, media streaming servers, and so on).

Linux can be as easy as you want, or as deep as you need. It features excellent power management, excellent customization capabilities and an unbeatable stability. As I said earlier, there are server distributions and desktop distributions, but what exactly is a distribution?

Well let’s start from the beginning:

From UNIX derived Linux. Linux has got different libraries, packages, drivers and derived into the base distributions (like Debian, Slackware). The base distributions itself derived into the well known distributions you can find daily updated these days (for example Ubuntu, derived from Debian)

Linux can be complicated at first, if you come from a different operating system, but if you buy your first computer and it comes with linux, if you master that, you can master any operating system.

The biggest advantage of linux systems is their compatibility with applications between different distributions. Even though distributions have different commands and libraries, with the right set of compilers and tools, if you have the source code of an application, you can make it run on all of the distributions and it would act the same.

This is a question which is asked often: why would I move to another social network? I already am on X!
Well, usually this is your answer when a friend invites you to a new social network, however, it can happen even if you just see some news about a new social networking website.

Let’s discuss some of the reasons which are making the users move to new social networking websites.

The most of the time, the reason is that the site has got old (like MySpace) and people are drifting away from it, moving to new things (Vkontakte, Facebook, Twitter).

Another reason could be the features that it offers. Let’s say that one allows you to have friends, upload pictures, set status, and comment on those things; now, the other one has got the same things plus video uploading, integration with another social networking services (YouTube, Twitter, etc.) and so on. Of course you will use the one with the most features.

Another important aspect is the way it allows you to share updates. Let’s take for example Twitter and Facebook. Twitter allows you to share ~150 characters, while Facebook allows you to share 1024 characters, it allows you to upload pictures, music and videos to their servers, and much more.

But the most important factor, is the compatibility on the devices. Let’s say that you like to go out with the bike daily, then of course, you want to see and give updates from your mobile device, not only your PC.

The internet is a medium where you can keep in touch with your friends and family, gather information, send details and updates, share video, audio and photographic content. However, you may do this in your free time, for free, but others are paid to do such kind of things.

On the internet you could search for jobs, like in real-life jobs, where you have to stay at the office for an specified amount of hours, or you could find employers which give you the requirements and you can work at home.

The only catch in this, is that you need to invest more time and you earn about a half of the profit of a real job. However, considering that you can do this at any hour of the day, without being forced to be at certain hours active, you could come to the same monthly profit as a real job.

There are different kinds of jobs you could have on the internet; you could be a designer, coder, photographer, music composer, information researcher, consultant, virtual assistant and so on.

An advantage of working online, is that a customer you had could recommend you to some friends, and this way, you could earn some extra bucks too.

But why do so many people use it?

The first thing that you need to know, is that the Windows operating system was the first OS that was userfriend back into it’s first years. You have UNIX, which was this console where you had to put commands, if you knew how; and you had Windows where you could move a mouse, open a folder, everything was graphically made, and now using commands.

You should also be aware that Microsoft is the single company which developed an operating system with a Business edition, and with Business products for their operating system.

Let’s say you run a business, and you need your employees to work within a software for accounting. In this case, Microsoft has operating system versions (like Vista, Windows 7) which come in different distributions (for simple users, or business edition), some have additional tools, some don’t.

Another reason for using Windows, is the huge amounts of help you could find on the internet. Thinking that more than 50 percent of the internet surfers own a Windows machine, logically, the most of them are troubleshoting windows problems.

Mac computers started hitting the market for home users at first, before the OS X. It was looking great, it was simple to use, it was able to fight viruses.

When Mac computers started to come with the new operating system, Mac OS X, musicians, photographers and video editors started turning their eyes to Macs.

They remained with an astonishing beautyful interface, however, renewed. They still are able to avoid viruses.

Through the time Apple developed further versions of Mac OS X, they knew that they would have to ugprade hardware (ram, processor, graphical processing units). After the Macs became more powerful, more and more people who are working with musicians, photographers and video editors started to move to Macs.

The Macs had everything they needed, a beautyful interface, an easy to use operating system, in other words, they could express their feelings and their creativity easely and faster.

Nowadays, Macs come in different flavours, for gaming purposes, for virtualization purposes, for work. It is important to note that Apple is improving the hardware as often as possible. Mac notebooks have an estimative lifetime of 10 hours on a single charge, and this is extremely long for a notebook with so much powerful hardware.

Anyone could open a social networking site, with a little bit on investment and a lot of promotion you could be the next Facebook, but let’s see how do the owners monetize, so that they earn their money back.

The first thing you need to keep in mind, is that anyone is trying to make money. Just because it’s fun to spend time on social networking sites, talking to friends and commenting on mutual things, it doesn’t mean that this was the purpose when the owners invested their money.

Think of it as a scheme: they invest money at the beginning (wheather it is a small amount or not) and then promote it; the users who are a part of the website, are inviting other friends and family members, and so on.

The first, and most common method for earning money for social networking site administrators, is by finding direct advertisers. By direct advertisers we are talking about big companies, which advertise a single product.

An alternative version, is by using public-service ads (Google Ads, Yahoo Ads, Microsoft Ads), which can be placed in various regions of the website (because they come in different sizes and shapes), have content filter (in this case, if the page you are on is about the band “X”, the ads shown are about the band “X” or music related to their genre) and geographical filtering.

Usually direct advertisers pay big amounts of money and advertise a product, but social networking sites are making large amounts of money of public-service ads as well.

Instant messengers offer a variety of functions, like games, themes and smileys.

It was pretty hard sending 20 emails to someone just to ask each other how you feel, but with the help of Instant messengers this changed.

In addition to the basic functions, that each messenger has, provided by any company, there are special pattended functions which appear only in some.

Nowadays, you can have a private conversation with someone over instant messenger, see that person, via webcam, or even hear his voice, by calling their PC.

In addition to private messanging, most of them have a function called Chat, or group messanging, where you could all watch webcams, speak, and write at the same time, and it would be a private conversation just between the group members.

In some messengers, the Chat function comes with prebuilt rooms, which are based on different subjects, so if you want to argue about something, you could just look it up into the chat rooms.

With the addition of instant messengers, the identity stealers have started to scam people, saying that they are someone else, and requireing bank information. To stop scammers, instant messenging providers have added “Block” functions and “Report” features.

The Internet was invented in the late 1960′s for the United States Department of Defense researchers. They needed a way to provide information to each other and other researchers. The Internet was developed by the ARPA. Scientists and academics were the most common users at the time, but as time went on they began to see how powerful this new technology would become. With the linking of computer terminals as a network, this would allow people all over the world to communicate by use of the computer.

In the Spring of 1998, they came up with an estimation of over fifty million people being avid users of the Internet all over the world. Computers could be found in schools, libraries, big and small corporations and growing larger and larger in each home.

College drop outs; Stephen G. Wozniak and Steven Jobs are responsible for the Apple I prototype in 1976. It took them six months to develop the prototype, which six hundred hobbyists had bought it to figure out how to get it all set up. In 1977 the Apple II was finalized as the first fully functional microcomputer. At this time customers had to use their TV as a screen and cassettes to store data.
