Have you ever heard the old saying “you are what you eat”. I don’t think people really realize how true that really is. If you are going to eat fast food and junk on a daily basis, you will be over weight and feel like you have no energy and you will feel run down all the time. When you eat and drink healthy foods you are giving yourself energy and refreshing your body.

What we eat provides us the energy we need to do our every day activities. The easiest thing for our body to digest is things like sugar and starches which are all carbohydrates which in return breaks down into glucose which is the bodies most favorite type of energy. If you do not provide enough carbs for your body, then our body will get it from the fat or protein that is stored in us, and if we get too much carbs then our body will just store them up as fat. When you are on a good protein diet then you are providing yourself with raw materials which our body turns into amino acids which in turn helps to build and repair our body “parts”. We need plenty of protein to for our immune systems, and all the organs of our bodies. Our body needs plenty of calcium which keeps our bones and teeth healthy and strong. This is just a very small amount of information on why nutrition is so important in our everyday lives.

Just about every living creature on this Earth needs to sleep at some point and time, it is just as important as eating. Our bodies need to rest in order to be prepared for the next day. This is also a time for our minds to think about things and sort them out. But scientist believe that during this time of sleep that our brains do some sort of organizing and storing information, also problem solving. The amount of sleep we need is dependent on our age. Babies need around fifteen hours of sleep in a 24 hour period. Adults only need about 7 hours of sleep. Children from the ages of five to twelve years of age need anywhere from ten to eleven hours of sleep, but this all depends on the individual child.

Have you noticed that when you do not get the normal amount of sleep that your body requires, you tend to be more grouchy and even clumsy, doing things that you would not normally do on a full night of sleep. If you were to miss a couple of nights of sleep you would not be able to function properly, you would have a hard time thinking straight. Scientist have studied people that have gone five consecutive nights without sleep, the person actually ends up hallucinating. The brain can not function and normal every day tasks become impossible.

So after reading this information, you might have a better understanding of the importance of sleep – for everyone. It is not beneficial for anyone to lose sleep. Did you know that an estimated average of 56,000 traffic accidents are caused by drivers falling asleep, which ends up turning into about 1,500 deaths annually.

Some people do not realize the importance of exercise. So when someone asks “why is exercise so important” then they are actually asking a pretty valid question. Some people may laugh and look at them like they are stupid but it very important to exercise and I am going to share a few reasons on why.

Not exercising or being inactive is actually a major health risk. In order for your heart, lungs, and joints to function properly, you need to exercise. Have you noticed that when you first wake up in the morning and your body and joints feel somewhat stiff and if you are like me you do some stretches? I know I feel a huge difference on my flexibility and stamina after just 20 minutes of stretching first thing in the morning. Our bodies want and need exercise. To be physically fit and healthy and to improve your appearance and it actually slows down the aging process just a bit.

When you do aerobics, walking, bicycling, or swimming, you build up your stamina and your body becomes stronger and uses less energy to do the normal everyday stuff. With exercise you build up the strength of your heart, you build good posture, and it helps with flexibility. If all of this is not reason enough then do it for your family and try to be a good influence. You will be amazed at how much more energy you will have when you exercise on a regular basis. Plus I don’t feel so guilty when I go for seconds!

Protein is a very important part of everyone’s diet. Our muscle tissue are made up of 2 types of proteins called actin and myosin these allow our muscle tissue to contract and shorten. The muscles being attached to our bones is what allows us to move around. Due to special types of muscle our hearts are able to pump blood. Muscles are also how we move food through the intestines. Our bones are mostly calcium but is held together in a protein type of composite. Protein also holds our nerves together. A huge majority of our body such as our skin, organs and blood vessels all have essential proteins. Without protein our skin would sag and wrinkle faster and would be more easily affected by any type of trauma.

Due to many proteins in conjunction with each other is what helps our blood to clot properly. There are special functions in our bodies that happen due to chemical reactions in our blood because of protein. Antibodies are a type of protein that keeps our immune systems safe from infections and illness.

People need twenty different types of amino acids to make all the proteins needed for their bodies. Ten of these amino acids are attained from the foods that we eat and the other ten is made by our bodies. This is just a little information that just barely touches on the importance of proteins and as you can see they are very important for our survival and need to be taken seriously. With a good healthy diet your body will be provided with all the proteins it needs.

Most people think we yawn because we are either tired or bored. In medical school you are taught that yawing is caused by low oxygen levels in our lungs. Some studies have actually shown that people do not breath in deep enough to fill the entire lung capacity and will only breath in enough to use the air sacs at the bottom of our lungs which are called alveoli. This is when our brain will tell our body to yawn deeply to get more air into our lungs. Amazingly you will feel refreshed after this deep yawn.

Some theories out there say that yawning helps cool the brain. Some say that when we yawn it triggers others to yawn. Yawning is known to increase your heart rate by at least 30%. Fetuses who are around 11 weeks gestation have been seen yawning in the womb via ultrasound. That is another question that has not been answered either, why do fetuses yawn in utero when they do not breath oxygen through their mouths. Here’s one more little tidbit of news, there was also an article written on humans and canines being able to make each other yawn, I think I just may go home tonight and try this on my dog Molly.

Unfortunetly the conclusion is that doctors and scientists do not have any hard concrete facts or evidence as to why we or our canine friends yawn. I bet you have yawned at least once while reading this, is it the power of suggestion, are you tired or just plain bored.

Would you believe that the average hospital bill can contain up to 600 dollars worth of errors. They are not mistakes that are done on purpose, they are mostly clerical errors. For example, you get a 50 dollar electrocardiogram but when it is entered on your bill it turns into a 500 hundred dollar charge just by the quick hit of an extra zero thrown in there. Of course you probably do not know what the normal charge is for an EKG so 99.9% of the time the error goes undetected.

Here are some major mistakes that you can commonly find and would never even think of it unless brought to your attention like I am doing now. If you have respiratory therapy such as an oxygen tank and breathing masks that was used, if you are no longer using it and it is not removed from your hospital room promptly, well most likely you will be charged for it even when it is not in use but just because it is in your room.

There could be extra pharmacy charges. If a nurse brings you medication and she realizes that it is the wrong one or you are allergic to it, whatever the reasons are if it is not returned to the pharmacy, you will be charged for it. If lab work is ordered and never performed you better believe that there might still be charges for that.

Just keep in mind if you ever end up in the hospital, you want to keep track of everything and ask how much things cost. If something is just sitting in your room and you are not using it, have them remove it.

Running shoes do not need to be broken in. They should feel good the very moment you try them on in the store. Your feet are a very important part of your body and if you do not protect them by wearing the proper shoes then you could be in a world of hurt in the near future.

You should have plenty of flexibility in the forefoot so that the shoe bends easily, basically so it flows with your foot as if they are one in the same. If you buy shoes that are too stiff then you will find your muscles in your feet and legs having to work harder and then of course you will be more sore. You need to make sure the shoe has good cushioning and padding, the reason for this is because the better quality of padding will absorb more shock which the most padding should be in the midsole of the shoe and that is where the greatest amount of shock hits your foot.

If money is a factor then you should start with the least expensive manufacturer in the store and work your way up until you find the perfect quality shoe that fits you and your budget. Keep in mind that you need plenty of toe room and for women shoes normally run small for running shoes, so you might have to go a half size to a whole size larger then normal. Don’t forget when trying on your shoes to have the same thickness of socks that you would be wearing while wearing them.

The Banana, is a sweet, white fruit with a yellow jacket. It comes from a plant and not from a tree unlike other fruits, and it is a very popular fruit to eat these days. Many people claim eating bananas is very healthy, so you may wonder, why are bananas good for you?

There are innumerable benefits associated with this delicious fruit. Apart from keeping you fit and healthy, it also helps in preventing many diseases and illnesses, making it an indispensable part of your daily diet. It is packed with vitamins, minerals and is also a good source of potassium, manganese, amino acids, sugar and carbohydrates. It has a high percentage of fibre, both soluble and insoluble, which helps in curing many diseases, easing up bowel movement. Bananas are made up of three natural sugars – glucose, fructose and sucrose. This makes it a source of instant energy.

Numerous researches and studies have suggested that bananas have the ability to boost brain power and the leaning capabilities of the students. This ability of the banana can be attributed to the presence of high potassium content. For the same reason, bananas are considered to play an effective role in reducing high blood pressure and stroke. The presence of potassium helps in minimizing the amount of calcium purged from the system either through urine or in secretions such as sweat, which in turn prevents the occurrence of kidney stones and also reduces the risk of osteoporosis.

The banana is rich in iron and hence is beneficial for anemic patients. Bananas can reduce stress levels too. Bananas contain tryptophan, an Amino acid, which is considered to be the building blocks of protein, which facilitate the body to produce serotonin and it in turn helps in creating a stable mood by acting on the brain. It makes you feel happier and improves your mood. It also provides a relief for those suffering from heart burns.

Bananas are very rich in fibre content and this helps in curing any bowel related problems like constipation. For those who are suffering from ulcers, it is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without discomfort. Furthermore it also helps in preventing ulcers. It counterbalances over-acidity and lessens irritation of the stomach. Bananas are helpful in the treatment of various allergies, kidney disorders, tuberculosis and urinary disorders. It is considered to be highly effective in weight reduction as it fastens the digestion and elimination process. The swelling and irritation caused by mosquito bites can be cured by rubbing the affected area with the inside of the banana skin. Bananas are rich in zinc content and this helps in strengthening the hair thereby preventing hair loss.

The Banana is a product of nature. It is therefore a natural cure to many illnesses and also doesn’t have any unwanted side effects. It is a fruit which gives plenty of energy and vital nutrients to the body and it is imperative that this fruit be made a part of our diet. It helps in increasing the body’s stamina and is certainly a very healthy food.

Before we get to them, I want you to visualize something with me. Imagine that you have a nice car. I mean, a really nice car! Would you allow this car to go without proper maintenance? Would you refuse to give the ingredients it needs to get you where you need to go? Would you refuse it oil, water and fuel? If you want to keep your car nice and you want your car to get you where you need to go, then you need to supply everything the car needs to operate well. Right?

Well, think of your body as your car — your vehicle if you will. You, like your car, need quality fuel to run the engine. Quality fuel, in this case, would be healthy food. Sure, you can eat unhealthy foods, just as you can give your car inferior gasoline that’s filled with impurities. But if you do, your car’s fuel filter will clog and eventually, you won’t be able to drive your car any longer, at least, not without some serious attention by an expensive professional.

The same goes for your body. Eating bad foods will clog up your fuel-delivery system, namely, your digestive tract and blood vessels. It won’t happen as quickly as it does with a car, but it WILL happen if you do not eat well. Arteriosclerosis, cancer, diabetes and many other such diseases are often related to poor diet. And while a car will belch out black, toxic smoke from its exhaust system, a human body will never have a normal “exhaust” either. Irritable bowel syndrome(IBS), colon cancer and other such diseases are prevalent with bad diets. The expensive mechanic your body will come to need will be a doctor, possibly even a hospital.

So, that’s reason number 1, eat healthy to prevent disease and increase your lifespan. Reason number 2 is all about delivering the important nutrients your body needs. As with a car that receives high-grade gasolines, healthy food will provide much needed elements that will clean out your system, which in turn, provides for optimal performance. Nutrients from your food will clean out toxins from a sluggish digestive tract and clogged blood vessels. These nutrients also become building blocks in your body, for the purpose of replacing old cells and creating new ones.

Finally, reason number 3, energy. Unfortunately, many folks come to rely upon drugs, like caffeine or worse, to keep them going. This sets up a vicious cycle for the average body and puts much more wear and tear on a person’s system than is necessary. Healthy food will give a person all the necessary components needed for plentiful energy.

So, put down that energy drink and pick up an apple. Healthy eating is important for a long life that can be enjoyed, pain- and disease free. You wouldn’t let your car deteriorate like this, why do it to your body? Learn why healthy eating is important and take good care of yourself.
